Low Level Easy Access Walk-In Mobility Shower Coventry
Recently, we worked with a client in Coventry who was no longer able to safely get in and out of their bath. The bathroom had unfortunately become a dangerous environment. Our client didn't want to overhaul the entire room, so we provided a targeted, practical solution: removing the bath and installing a low-level, easy-access walk-in shower.

Overcoming UK Plumbing Challenges: Why the Tray is Elevated

You might notice the shower tray is raised slightly above the floor. In many UK properties, bath and shower waste pipes run above the floorboards, which can restrict how low a shower tray can sit. While there are ways to get a tray completely flush with the floor, they aren't always practical or permissible:
  • Structural Restrictions: It is illegal in the UK to cut into floor joists to run a shower waste pipe.
  • Hidden Drainage: Some homes have extensions where the original external soil stack is now encapsulated inside the house, making it inaccessible without damaging lower areas like kitchens.
  • Concrete Floors: In this specific property, the bathroom was downstairs on a concrete floor. Digging into the concrete to run pipework through the external brickwork was impossible without risking damage to the home's damp-proof course.

  • The Alternative Solution: We can install a shower waste pump to achieve a flush floor finish. However, some clients object to this due to the extra cost, the noise the pump makes, and the aesthetics of having the unit on display. In this case, our clients were completely happy to have the tray slightly raised to avoid a pump.

Minimizing Disruption and Cost

To ensure the least amount of damage and disruption to the home, we:
  • Removed the old bath, loose tiles, and damaged plaster.
  • Re-boarded and strengthened the walls.
  • Fitted high-quality, watertight shower panels exclusively around the showering area.

By choosing a 1800mm by 800mm shower tray—which is both longer and wider than the original bath, we perfectly covered the old footprint. This clever formatting meant we didn't have to repair or replace any of the existing flooring, saving the client money and mess. Project Timeline: This entire transformation took just 3 days from start to finish.

Tailored Product Selection

We carefully selected and installed high-quality products designed for longevity and maximum accessibility:
  • Braddan 1800mm by 800mm

  • 1000mm wide and 8mm thick toughened glass shower screen.

  • Wall-mounted shower seat.
  • Thermostatic shower with an integrated grab riser bar.

Designed with Purpose: The Objectives

Our primary objective was to create an independent, confident showering experience. Every single stage of using the shower was meticulously thought out—from entering and turning on the water to sitting, standing, and leaving the area.

1. The Dual-Pole Bus & Train Concept

We installed a dual-pole solution to enable the user to enter the shower confidently. Think of it like boarding a bus or standing on a train—having sturdy grab poles accessible on both sides keeps you perfectly balanced and secure at all times.

2. Smart Shower Valve Placement

We positioned the thermostatic shower controls on the side wall. This allows the user to step into the enclosure and turn the water on before entering the wet zone, letting them wait for the water to warm up before safely moving to the seat.

3. Seated Stability

The wall-mounted shower seat provides a secure, comfortable position so the user can bathe without the risk of slipping or experiencing fatigue.

Need Advice on Independent Living?

When we meet with clients, we don't just look at the plumbing; we discuss exactly how you use your bathroom. Our solutions are backed by years of hands-on experience and valuable feedback from occupational therapists.

When updating a bathroom for mobility and independence, you rarely need to renovate the entire room. In most cases, we can modify the bath area alone, leaving your existing toilet and basin exactly where they are. This targeted approach means the work is completed much faster, creates far less mess, and drastically reduces disruption to your daily routine."
